Ork Chunks

Lately, I've been breaking up armies into 500 point chunks in order to lessen the preparation time on game night (more detail here). Today, we're going to look at how the Orks have been broken down. Keep in mind that, other than the weirdboy, this entire list was made from the Assault on Black Reach boxed set models. What can I say? I wanted another army and needed it to be cheap!

Chunk #1 (500 points)
HQ: Weirdboy (Warphead)
Troops: 20 Boyz (Big Shoota x2)
Troops: 20 Boyz (Big Shoota x2)
Troops: 10 Boyz (Big Shoota x1)
Fast Attack: 2 Deffkoptas (Rokkit Launchas)

Notes: I like the weirdboy a lot... I think he's really under-appreciated. Yes, he can blow up your boyz (and himself) if you roll badly, but the shooting attacks are nothing to sneeze at, and the teleportation ability has always been beneficial to me.

Chunk #2 (490 points)
Elite: 10 Nobz
Elite: 10 Nobz
Fast Attack: 2 Deffkoptas (Rokkit Launchas)

Notes: This chunk brings out the big boys... eventually I want to do some conversions so that the nobz are equipped differently and I can play tricks with wound allocation, but I haven't had the time yet.

Chunk #3 (505 points)
HQ: Warboss (Power Klaw)
Troops: 20 Boyz (Big Shoota x2)
Troops: 10 Boyz (Big Shoota x1)
Fast Attack: 5 Deffkoptas (Rokkit Launchas)

Notes: It is important to remember that the warboss makes one of the nob units a troop choice... here's hoping I don't forget when it matters. Boyz can be combined with previous units into squads of up to 30... I prefer four squads of 20. The same is true for deffkoptas, but with a cap of five per unit. I prefer three squads of 3 or a 5/4 split.

Next time, we'll take a look at Space Marine chunks!

  2. I've really considered taking a Warp Head in my lists ... being able to re-roll the warp powers means you have a pretty solid chance of getting useful powers out of him. I run a foot heavy list ... so at the 1750 point level on up I take Ghaz (I care not what anyone says about characters ... to make the list viable his uber waaagh! is necessary). You have inspired me to paint up a weird boy and actually try it in the list. My normal list is all foot with ghaz and a regular warboss as the HQ in trucks with squads of boyz (both also counting as troop). Its a hard list to run ... but at 170 boyz ... all troops ... its a fun list to run and hard for most lists that aren't optimized for just troop killing to deal with (which is most tourney lists). I don't think its a magic bullet list, far from it ... but to me it epitomizes the kind of Ork list I wanted to run and again ... for me ... its fun as hell to play. I have soooo many deffkoptas I want to get them painted up and experiment with them a bit. At some point I'll put my marines down as the tournament list of choice and attempt to use my Orks and at that point I'll explore some of the decent combos they have available (the deathstar 19 nob squad with a painboy in it ... in a battlewagon .. for example ... or the now infamous nob bike squad with a painboy, etc.). Anyway thanks for the post! Goooo gree

  3. Yeah, I would definitely look at that greenskin horde and think, "What good are my meltas now?!?!"

I'm not all that familiar with the ork codex, but after looking up painboyz, I definitely want to start including them! Having Feel No Pain makes me feel like I'm running my Eldar with Fortune up at all times!

I love the deffkoptas too, although I often wish they were cheaper. I need to convert my AoBR models to less expensive versions.

Glad you've decided to give the weirdboy a shot... take my advice: put him in a group of nobz and take the first opportunity to teleport onto/near an objective or juicy target on the opposite side of the table.
