I once wanted to run this Blood Angels list... but after actually playing them a bit, I think I'd rather have something like this one:

The best part about this list is that the only thing I'll need to purchase is the stormraven gunship... and because there isn't a model for it yet, I won't be tempted! The most noticeable difference? That tactical squad is no more... now it's a devastator squad with four missile launchers instead of the one that I would have been running with the tactical squad. Is it more points? Actually they're pretty comparable (although the devastator squad has fewer marines)... but I think it will be worth it. I might consider other heavy weapons for the devastators, except that I already have tons of missile launcher bits from the Dark Angels veterans kits.

Shield Drone Spam?

I stumbled upon an interesting idea for Tau while I was playing around with Army Builder this weekend... adding lots of drones to your units to protect those important crisis suits. I don't actually have the codex, but my brother's preferred army is Tau so I play against them all the time. I was fiddling around with what I would build if I had the models and I realized that, in Army Builder at least, all three crisis suits in a squad can take drone controllers, and thus add two drones each.

Normally, I aim my heavy weapons at broadsides because they don't have an invulnerable save and I can usually instant kill them and bypass that extra wound. However, if Army Builder is correct and this can be done according to the rules in the codex, adding extra shield drones to that unit of broadsides would completely ruin my day. If this is correct, my little bro could add six wounds and six invulnerable saves to his heavy hitters for just 90 points. Granted, that means he'll be even more out-gunned because those shield drones don't have weapons, but his broadsides will last much longer and be able to shoot more often because I won't be able to kill them quickly. They'll be almost as hard to kill as a unit of thunder hammer terminators!

I need to see his codex soon... I might actually build Tau for myself if this is true... I'm that intrigued...

Painting Space Marines

I'm far from an expert painter, so whenever I catch a tutorial that looks easy enough that even I could pull it off, I bookmark it. This particular video is one that I liked so much that I want to share it...

The steps are easy, the result is great, and more videos will follow. I can't wait to try this out and to see the upcoming videos!

HobbyTown Tournament Results

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was going to try to attend a local tournament at HobbyTown... and I did. It was an interesting experience, to say the least. I thought that I would be playing my Eldar, but I was so excited about my Blood Angels that I decided to put together the extra 250 points I'd need for the tournament and run them instead. By the end of the tournament, I was wishing I had brought the Eldar...

Recap of the rules:
4x4 tables (they were actually more like 3x4)
All missions were annihilation
One HQ and two troops required
No more than one choice from each of the other slots
No named characters
Double elimination

Round One vs. Chaos Marines (John): 
This was one of those games when the dice just loved me and hated him. He was running a squad of Khorne berserkers and a squad of thousand sons, along with a sorcerer and a daemon prince. I popped both his rhinos on turn one, which made him walk across the field. I put a few wounds on his demon prince and then it essentially committed suicide when it exploded a rhino and died in the blast. I probably could have tabled him on turn four, but the dice suddenly turned to his favor... fortunately for me, he was already too far behind at that point to recover.

Round Two vs. Imperial Guard (Walker):
Walker is by far the youngest opponent I've ever played against, and he gave me a real run for my money. He wasn't able to table me, but it didn't take long for me to realize that this would be an uphill battle at best. I did manage to wipe out a couple squads of infantry, but the best I could do to his tanks was stun one... and a stun doesn't give you a kill point. I took a sound beating during this game!

Round Three vs. Orks (Didn't write down his name!):
This was the most even of my three matches, but I couldn't secure a victory. It wasn't too long before this game that they announced that the tournament might spill over to the next day, and I knew I couldn't compete the next day anyway, so I wasn't nearly as disappointed by this loss as I might have been otherwise. This was the only time that my flamer-heavy honor guard really got to shine. I didn't keep track of how many boyz they killed, but I'm pretty sure they were worth more than their weight in plastic this game.

  • I didn't encounter any poor sportsmanship all day long. All three of my opponents were really nice guys and I'd love the chance to play any of them again.
  • One player only brought about 600 points of marines, and lots of folks offered to let him borrow models so that he wouldn't be at a disadvantage.
  • The ork game that came down to one kill point on the last turn was a nail-biter. I love the close games.
  • Surviving an Imperial Guard alpha strike with nothing worse than a "shaken" damage result.
  • John's sorcerer managed to turn my Sanguinary Novitiate into a chaos spawn, which I didn't think was all that cool until he explained that it was the first time he had ever gotten the power to work.

  • There weren't enough tables for everyone to play at once. Playing four games at a time with eleven players in the tournament always left three people with nothing to do.
  • The tables were a little terrain-barren (two or three pieces per table and very little of it blocked LOS). I had lascannons that could shoot all the way across the table and take advantage of this, but I felt bad for the guys who just had to run across an open field.
  • I picked pretty crappy powers for my librarian... I really wish I had been running Blood Lance and Unleash Rage! Fear of the Darkness sounds great, except when 2/3 of your opponents are fearless. Shield of Sanguinius is cool too, but I can usually create cover saves with other tanks and/or smoke so it's actually a little unnecessary.
  • I kept forgetting to roll for Red Thirst! Two of the games, I remembered by the end of my first movement phase, but I never did it at the right time... and in my first match I didn't think about it until I was about to assault for the first time in turn two or three!
  • I should have run Eldar... my seer council, while a point sink, is a much more versatile unit than anything in my Blood Angels list. I really wish I had brought them. I think I would have fared better and I know I would have made fewer rules blunders.
Overall, considering this was the first tournament the store has ever run, I was impressed. I think next time players should be required to submit lists early so that they could be checked and the tournament could start on time.... but I'm looking forward to the next time we play.

Rifts Wave Campaign: Restarting!

So... after way too much time floundering around and not making any decisions, I finally decided to just go with Google Groups. If we don't like the platform, we can always change later. Until it looks like things need to change, we'll go with this:

Quim, Matt, and I will be group managers (so we can edit all of the content)

Regular group members won't be able to post, but are welcome to follow along. If/when I decide to add new PCs to the mix (or get lurkers involved in other ways), they'll come from current group members rather than invite random folks from the net.

HobbyTown Tournament?

On September 11th, HobbyTown of Hickory will be hosting a Warhammer 40K tournament. If I don't end up with more important plans, I'm going to be there.

The Basics:
4x4 playing surface. All missions are annihilation. I forgot to ask about deployment. For army building, I'll have to follow these restrictions:
  • 750 Points
  • One HQ minimum
  • Two troops minimum
  • One elite maximum
  • One fast attack maximum
  • One heavy support maximum
I'd like to run my Blood Angels. However, since only 500 points of that army is assembled and I don't foresee having very much time on my hands between now and then, Eldar will probably be my army of choice. I'm probably going to run something like...

HQ: Farseer (Fortune, Runes of Warding, Jetbike) 130
HQ: 5 Warlocks (Jetbikes, 3x Destructor, 2x Singing Spear, 1x Embolden) 266

I'm excited about playing in a tournament. This will meet 2010 Gaming Resolutions #2 and #3, neither of which I've been very successful in addressing this year.

Slowing Down...

I was really on a roll in August... I had something to post almost every weekday. Unfortunately, last week's posts were ones that I was able to write and schedule to post ahead of time. I haven't actually had time to write in over a week because of my new job. Don't get me wrong... working again after eight months of being a full-time unemployed college student is great because I'm actually getting paid. The not-so-great parts are having to cancel game night and having nothing to share on the blog this week.

Fortunately, I think the initial rush of the new job's workload has climaxed and I'll be able to find the time to write soon... but that's still up in the air. There are two things that I really want to get to ASAP...

  • Getting the Rifts Wave campaign moved so we can continue
  • Assemble the rest of the Blood Angels that I ordered
Here's hoping work slows down soon so that my hobbies won't have to....
