My Return to Friday Night Magic

Although I've played a few casual games, I hadn't attended a Magic tournament since April of 2009. But for some reason, I got the itch a few weeks ago and decided to scratch it. I was staying in town on a Friday night, which is fairly unusual for me, and I got the urge to play... so I gave the FLGS a call to see what the night's format would be and got lucky. It was draft night, Scars of Mirrodin and Mirrodin Besieged. It would be my first tournament in two years...

I didn't know squat about the new sets, but I knew enough to stick to my tried and true rules of thumb for drafting:

  1. Removal is king.
  2. Card advantage is queen.
  3. Big threats are fun.
  4. In the absence of big threats, evasion will do.

I stuck to these rules, and I found myself quickly established in red/green after a first pick Thrun, a second pick Burn the Impure, and then another Burn the Impure soon thereafter. I remember that both Red Sun's Zenith and Hellkite Igniter came relatively late, considering their potential in draft. When all was said and done, I ended up with the following cards:

Red
Goblin Wardriver
Kuldotha Flamefiend
Barrage Ogre
Assault Strobe
Gnathosaur x2
Concussive Bolt
Spiraling Duelist
Hellkite Igniter
Red Sun's Zenith
Koth's Courier x3
Burn the Impure x3
Crush
Into the Core x2
Galvanic Blast
Vulshok Heartstoker
Blisterstick Shaman

Green
Thrun, the Last Troll
Tel-Jilad Fallen
Blunt the Assault
Copperhorn Scout
Glissa's Courier
Blightwidow
Lead the Stampede
Tangle Mantis

Black
Moriok Reaver
Scourge Servant
Spread the Sickness
Horrifying Revelation x2

White
Whitesun's Passage x2

Blue
Scrapdiver Serpent

Artifact
Ichor Wellspring
Training Drone
Kuldotha Forgemaster
Phyrexian Digester
Flayer Husk
Silver Myr
Copper Myr
Gold Myr
Horizon Spellbomb
Barbed Battlegear
Sphere of the Suns
Mortarpod

From this pool, I built the following deck:
Land
11 Mountains
6 Forests

Creatures
Thrun, the Last Troll
Tangle Mantis
Blightwidow
Hellkite Igniter
Kuldotha Flamefiend
Barrage Ogre
Silver Myr
Copper Myr
Gold Myr

Artifacts
Sphere of the Suns
Barbed Battlegear
Flayer Husk
Mortarpod
Ichor Wellspring

Spells
Lead the Stampede
Crush
Galvanic Blast
Red Sun's Zenith
Into the Core x2
Burn the Impure x3

The deck has a strong endgame, with plenty of mana acceleration to get there quicker and plenty of spot removal to weather any early rushes.

I ended up going 3-1 in the swiss, but I was so tired by the time the swiss rounds were over around midnight that I was tempted to call it quits and go home. Fortunately for me, the tournament organizer decided to end things early and split the prizes equally among the top four.

It was a blast, and it really reminded me how much I miss playing competitively. Although I can't see myself forking out the cash to get back into standard again and most of my favorite cards have rotated out of extended, I do see more drafts for me in the future... and I heard about this "new" format called commander that I want to give a shot...
