Zakninid, Drow Cleric/Rogue of Vhaeraun

Last Thursday, we started a new 4E campaign. It was a bit of the "thrown together at the last minute" sort, with the DM not realizing he would DM until the day of, two of us having first level characters, one of us having no character at all, and our DM (wanting to run something with which he was familiar because of the late notice) expecting 5th level characters. Needless to say, preparation was a little hectic. However, this character (or at least the concept) is one that I've had brewing in the back of my mind since 2008 when I mentioned in this post that I disagreed with Vhaeraun getting killed off in the Forgotten Realms.


Zakninid (shadow harbringer) is known as "Z" to those lacking the skill or patience to pronounce his name correctly. Born and raised on trade caravans weaving their way through the cavernous Underdark of Faerun, Zakninid was the son of a passionate cleric of Vhaeraun whose idea of resisting Lolth involved cheating her followers out of as much gold as possible. However, he found himself in the midst of social turmoil when Vhaeraun was murdered by Elistraee. Even when confirmation came, Zakninid still refused to believe that the fight was over. Instead of moving on to different paths or deities, he split from the trade caravan and sought his own path to divine power.


Zakninid spent the next few years questing and researching, trying to find evidence of Vhaeraun's continued existence. Tales of Bane's death and return strengthened his resolve. After all, if a human deity could die and return, surely a drow deity could do the same. He has considered quite a few theories, from the idea that Vhaeraun has simply gone into hiding to the idea that he is actually dead but can be revived by a strong enough follower. Perhaps the most puzzling clue he has found is an ancient text that hinted of a shadow god that would one day be restored to power by a follower who would be "of the world but not of the world." Zakninid is convinced that the text foretells his success, and in hopes of becoming "not of this world" himself, he has chosen to leave Abeir-Toril. If the text is true, his answers must come from somewhere far beyond his home.
