The Dugout's First Legacy Tournament, a Semi-Success

A few weeks ago, I posted this to see if I could garner any interest in a legacy tournament in The Dugout of Hickory. Standard and draft have plenty of support, but those of us who love the older cards are usually just out of luck except for casual games. Initially, I thought we would have a good turnout, but on the day of the tournament, very few of the people I thought were coming actually showed up.

So we ran an unsanctioned tournament with just six people... still fun, but just not the same as getting a big crowd. I brought Junk, and I was able to play a pretty decent (as in, not budget) list since John let me dip into his collection and borrow a few things. My deck list was:

Lands (23)
4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Windswept Heath
3 Wasteland
3 Horizon Canopy
3 Bayou (borrowed)
1 Scrubland
1 Savannah (borrowed)
1 Volrath's Stronghold
1 Bojuka Bog
1 Forest
1 Swamp

Creatures (11)
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Knight of the Reliquary
3 Qasali Pridemage

Other (26)
4 Pernicious Deed
4 Duress
4 Hymn to Tourach
3 Sensei's Divining Top
3 Swords to Plowshares
2 Life from the Loam
2 Diabolic Edict
2 Maelstrom Pulse
2 Thoughtseize

Sideboard
4 Xantid Swarm (borrowed)
3 Extirpate
3 Krosan Grip
3 Engineered Plague
2 Bojuka Bog

Overall, I thought the deck was okay... not overpowering, but with a decent shot of winning regardless of my opponent's strategy. Unfortunately, I made some terrible play errors and ended with a record of 1-2. I lost to affinity, beat suicide black, and then lost to John's black-white concoction (which is similar to this). The deck of the day, though, was this off the wall Honden control deck. I don't think it won many games, but it certainly went down with some surprisingly strong plays.

I didn't like the Diabolic Edicts, the Maelstrom Pulses, or the Qasali Pridemages. Pulse was too slow, I always wanted edict to be targeted removal, and the pridemages... well... I always wanted them to be more threatening. I really want to get my hands on some Mox Diamonds, and I might even try to run the dumb Vampire Hexmage - Dark Depths combo eventually. Who knows... I'm just hoping we get to do these more often... and I'm hoping we get more people the next time.

And maybe I'll get enough experience with the format that I won't make such terrible mistakes...

  3. Wow, nice grab.
    You must have "future sight".

  4. I do wish I had 12, but you just never know. I play green so much, I usually end up doing well on green cards that skyrocket in price... I'm always trying to get them cheap while they're still underestimated. I'm still hoping Dungrove Elder sees a big price jump since I've been picking them up for a dollar or two a piece since M12 came out. Star City Games has them priced at $3.99 and they're sold out, so that's probably a good sign.
