The RoBG does take quite a bit of time. It took me several weeks to 'complete' mine and honestly, there's still more that I'd like to do with it. One thing that I can say for certain is that once finished your efforts will be greatly rewarded. :)

What if you use the same flock but wash it or drybrush it to make it look dead? I've done this on some of my bases to alter the variety of the grass while still using the same stuff. The color painted under the flock could also have a big effect on the tone. Either way, definitely try it on a base or scrap of plasticard first though before hitting your big board.
